TRP wars or not, celeb power has been a consistent method by television channels to grab eye balls. While Amitabh Bachchan’s entry on Indian Television was a major turning point with the success of Kaun Banega Crorepati, Shah Rukh Khan, Govinda, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Priyanka Chopra, Arshad Warsi, Sanjay Dutt and Abhay Deol were not too far behind in taking the trend forward. Show hosts, reality show judges or just promotional special appearances; film stars on TV has been a routine occurrence.
Over a decade later, not much has changed. Amitabh Bachchan stills hosts KBC in his unconventional manner, questioning the common man and acting as a host for film promotions, this time only on Sony or a channel popularly called SET. Meanwhile Salman Khan is hosting a show on Colors TV by the name BIGG BOSS. And now, even star chef Sanjeev Kapoor has made a mainstream comeback with Sanjeev Kapoor Ke Kitchen Khiladi.
But with the increasing updates do people still vouch for star-studded attractions on TV? Or is it the other way round? The rising reach of Indian television is perhaps the reason for the celebrity clutter on TV shows. And how can we miss the mention of popular promotional hubs like KBC, Bigg Boss, Comedy Nights with Kapil, Dance India Dance, Indian Idol and of course, Jhalak Dikhlaja. While most urban television audience are much over their star craze and their appearance on various shows, the rural masses still like watching their favourite celebs on TV shows.
And even though the urbanites love their daily soap plots, they are not too far from the star power entertainment. Here is where the love for internet comes in to play. Not just gossip sites provide the much needed masala, but also the official websites and social media platforms provide and promote channels by uploading recent episodes, for online viewing experience.
Channels like Colors TV have already started providing live streaming and spoiler alerts of their number one show, BB Season 7. And since Hindi TV online serials have provided more than one benefit to its viewers, one can count on global accessibility of their favorite Indian shows to their viewers as the most important thing of the lot. For the rest of the viewers, it is just the break free episodes and accessibility that work wonders, while watching their favorite stars and shows. And the trend has just begun. With Indian television going through its major technological transition; let us hope for brighter times ahead!
