Animal Photography – How To Take Great Wildlife Pictures

If you love taking animal pictures then this article will give you some helpful tips that you can start using immediately. Animal photography, also referred to as wildlife photography, includes everything from polar bears to your pet at home. This article focuses on wildlife photography but you can apply many of these tips to taking photos of your own pets.

The basics to taking great wildlife pictures start with these tips. As always there are exceptions, but the following go a long ways towards ensuring successful animal photography:

– Always use natural light to your advantage.

– Fill the frame with the subject.

– Focus on the eyes.

– Shoot from various angles.

– Capture personality.

Perhaps you are wondering how you can, without a humongous lens and SLR safely get close enough to a wild animal to “capture personality” or “fill the frame”?

Actually even professional wildlife photographers don’t always take their winning photographs in the wild. Most of the wonderful pictures you see of wolves, polar bears and other wild creatures were taken at wildlife sanctuaries and zoos. Cheating? Maybe, but it’s safer for the photographer and doesn’t disturb their free roaming cousins’ mating and feeding cycles.

Some of the wildlife sanctuaries give special photo tours but if that’s not possible, there are many things you can do to get professional quality photos with a compact camera.

Animal Photography Tips for Wildlife Sanctuaries and Zoos

1) Simplify the Composition

If the background is distracting, use a wide aperture or Portrait mode to blur it. Or, you can use a photo editor like Photoshop to clean up or blur the background.

2) Go Natural

Avoid showing cage bars, fences, humans, signs, etc. If it is safe and abides by the rules, point the lens through a gap in the fence so you can take the photo without the fence showing. Often times there is a vantage point that will let you take pictures over the top of the fence. Look for these opportunities. Again, use a photo editor to blur what you couldn’t avoid when shooting the picture.

3) Fill the Frame

Use zoom (optical for best quality) or a telephoto lens to get close ups.

4) Sports Mode

Use Sports mode or set shutter speed priority to around 1/250 to freeze movements.

5) Use Light and Weather to Best Effect

Overcast days are often best for animal photography. If the overcast isn’t too bright, it will prevent glare from light colored or watery backgrounds. If you have an SLR and the overcast light is too dark, raise the ISO. With the right amount of overcast, you can get well exposed, sharp pictures with your compact, and the animals won’t be squinting.

Since the eyes are the most expressive and the best place to focus, try to avoid any squinting. Another way to eliminate this is photograph when the animal’s back is to sun. In this case you’ll need to use flash fill (by turning off your automatic flash and setting it to “on”) to help prevent underexposure and you’ll need to use a lens hood or wear a broad brimmed hat to prevent lens flare.

6) Try this When Shooting through Glass

When you want a picture of a terrarium or aquarium critter, turn on the flash and shoot from an angle. Make sure to check your camera manual for the safe distance when using the flash or you could damage an animals (or humans) eyes. Or, turn off the flash and carefully press the lens directly against the glass.

7) Plan your Visits for the Best Photo Ops

Others will especially love seeing your animal photography when it includes baby animals. Many times zoos and sanctuaries will let visitors know when new babies are expected. Another great photo opportunity is meal time. Animals that stay in hiding throughout much of the day will come out to eat. Finally, if you’re visiting a sanctuary or zoo when the weather’s hot, go early in the day when the animals will be most active, not napping.

8) Use Context

While usually it’s best to fill the frame with the animal, sometimes the context is too interesting to bypass. Examples of using context: a child and baby animal looking at each other, a giraffe, long neck bent as it peers down at a car in front of yours at the drive-through safari park.

9) Capture Expressions

Animals, whether our pets or wildlife, make the cutest expressions. Be ready with your camera! Even just normal expressions like a wolf pup yawning or a tiger licking its lips are cute or interesting. The more you know about your favorite species, the better you’ll be able to capture those unforgettable pictures.

So, the next time you’re ready to take some wildlife pictures, use these animal photo tips and you’ll be amazed at the difference applying this tips can have on your photos.

Wedding Photography And The Dangers Of Over-processing

In the digital age of photography, post-production can be as important as capturing the image itself. And with amazing advances in post-processing software, like Photoshop, an image can be manipulated to astounding degrees – even to a point of being unrecognizable from the original.

Unlimited possibilities is where some wedding photographers, mostly amateurs but also some experienced photographers, go dreadfully wrong. Of course, it’s great to add some obviously funky effects to a few pictures here and there. But, good wedding photography incorporates post-production in the same way a good wedding make-up artist plies their trade (ie) even if there is a lot of make-up, it’s subtle and tasteful.

Of course, subtlety and taste are subjective. So, when it comes to selecting the best wedding photography one needs to look carefully/closely at the photographer’s work to evaluate their use of effects after the fact.

For example, many wedding photographers will do some skin smoothening, especially for the couple shots. This is one of those effects that if overdone looks awful – like the front covers of some magazines that have been over-airbrushed so the subject looks plasticky. Conversely, just the right amount of this effect will nicely enhance the subject. The goal is for the subject to look like the best version of themselves without crossing the line into looking like a mannequin.

Meanwhile, skin smoothening is just one of many effects that can be utilized to varying degrees to either fix an image or improve it. Other effects that are employed may seem like a good idea at the time but they end up being passing fads that do not stand the test of time – like bad fashion from the 80s. The difference is that bad fashion often makes a comeback, which is almost always not the case with tasteless/misguided post-production.

The best wedding photographers employ post-production software to produce images that stand out in all the right ways. Make sure your wedding photography is on the right side of the sometimes fine line.

Professional Fine art photography

Photography is the art of taking the photos through the camera. This is an occupation or career for some and a hobby for many to pursue. Use of digital cameras of different grades and specifications is made for this purpose. While a common person might be using the camera present in his mobile, professionals make use of the stand alone cameras with advanced features which clearly mark the difference in the quality of photos, be it the black and white photographs or the coloured ones.

Black and white photographs give a vintage look. These invoke the memories of past and are treated as pieces of nostalgic art. These are associated with the historic past, when the coloured photography was around and every photo shot was in hues of black and white only. Today, this type of photography is treated as a welcome break from the colour photography. This is treated as something different from routine. It is considered to be classic in approach.

The photographs are shot for any real life object, place or things. The art lies in not just taking a shot but also making sure that there could not have been anything better than that shot. There is no dearth of things of which photos can be taken. Fine art photography can be done for the various gifts that Mother Nature has given us or also for the wonderful creations of man. Taking the black and white photographs is quite challenging. The effects of shadow, depth of shoot, background and foreground colour hues make things complex. Then the shoot has to be done in such a way that it brings out images of Australia in sharper focus. All this requires a great deal of maturity and professional in the photographer.

A professional photographer might be working on demand of the different private individuals and organization or industry. His corporate photography service might include doing the photo shoot for the models, fashion and beauty industry as well as for other industries for their advertising needs. Some of the photographers specialize in the wilderness photography while some others specialise in the corporate photography. However, for some of the highly skilled photographers, working in any stream is not a problem.

Australia is a large country, offering plenty to the professional photographers to shoot for. Their aim is to capture the images of Australia, whether man made or natural, whether for their own hobby or for the others. Fine art photography is based on the creative genius of the photographer and has artistic aspects to it. The fine art photographs find their place in the art galleries. This is generally treated as different from journalism photography, which is essentially meant for news products, and also from commercial or corporate photography which is mainly meant for advertisement purposes.

Photographers may be selling their artworks in different ways. The black and white photographs could be made available to public at large, or there can be limited edition photos which could be given for a one time fee to individuals or organizations for some specific uses.

Still Life Photography Tips – How To Take Good Photos

Still life photography has lots of practical and valuable uses. Perhaps you want to take a photograph of a beautiful bowl of fruit or perhaps you have learned that an important key to eBay success is uploading quality photos of your products. Learning still life photography can also give you opportunities for selling your photograph downloads on microstock sites or to food magazines. No matter what your reason, still life photography is a great skill to learn.

Unless you are photographing specific products or pictures for a magazine assignment, the subjects for your still life photography are endless. Fine art still lifes aren’t limited to just apples and grapes. Even super simple items like a few artfully arranged spools of thread can be interesting and attract attention. There are a couple of microstock sites like Shutterstock and iStock that have a high demand for all sorts of still life pictures from simple to complex.

In one way, still life photography is a lot easier than other forms of photography like landscape, sports or pet photography. With still life pictures, you can arrange the objects exactly how you want them and have full control over the photo’s composition.

And sometimes, good quality still life pictures can be even more challenging to photograph. Because still lifes are taken up close, it’s easy to see imperfections on your subject that you would normally never see.

Despite its challenge, using basic photography skills and the following tips, you can create quality still life pictures.

Lighting for Still Life Photography

With most professional photographers, they use a light box or soft box to take their still life photos. Although soft boxes can help out a lot, they still aren’t absolutely necessary to get good results as you’ll see shortly. However, if you do want one, you can find a soft box online or you can easily make one using instructions you find online. The purpose of these lighting tools is to provide even light on the subject.

Another way to get this good quality light is to set up your shoot outside. A high overcast or bright sky can create a natural soft box effect without having any of the harsh shadows.

Composition for Still Life Photography

When composing your photograph, you need to arrange the objects in a pleasing composition. Use a classical composition technique such as “Rule of Thirds” or “Leading Lines” or “Frame within a Frame” to create a good composition. Arrange the items artfully and use your imagination to get the exact placement that you want. For example, if you’re taking a picture of an apple try taking a bite out of it to give it some added interest.

Fill the Frame with Your Subject

Remember, the only thing that should be in your viewfinder or on your preview LCD screen is your composition. You need to remove any distractions or clutter from the background so you can have a clean and up close image. If you have a backdrop or background you don’t like don’t worry about it because it can be easily solved. The light box or soft box will solve this problem, but if you’re taking pictures outside and have a distracting background simply place a piece of white foam board behind your subject and you’ll be all set. If you want a sharp image, make sure to use macro mode or you can end up with a fuzzy image.

Look for a Good Angle and Start Shooting!

Rather than taking a picture from your head level, try holding the camera so that it’s at the same height as your subject. You should also try shooting from a variety of different angles.

Hopefully these tips have provided you some helpful information on taking still life photos that you can start putting to use immediately.

Excellence In Erotic Nude Photography

When most hear the words “Erotic Photography” photos of bare women with no morals taking advantage of themselves for money is what comes to mind. Erotic photography is very much more than this. At its heart, erotic photography is a way to capture the essence of the body, the external beauty, and subtleties that define sensuality and eroticism.

Erotic photography is defined as photographing the nude body in a manner which is artistic and creative. Whereas, we commonly think of porn material as the edgy, degrading, and often trashy images of women, with low moral standards behind it. Many photographers are spend many years refining the art of erotic photography. Some even have award winning erotic photography which features a nude subject. Even the erotic photography models undergo long sessions of training to master their poses and to create the subtle nuances that define their area of work.

Long before magazines like Playboy were ever printed erotic photography was popular. History is filled with examples of erotic art and nude portraits. Because of the controversy, in the 1900’s , those who were skilled in the art of erotic photography were chastised and therefore would take the photos anonymously. Even though sex sites reigns supreme on the internet, it’s still difficult to find true erotic photography, which stands apart from it’s distant relative, porn. With some extensive searching, using choice key phrases like “nude art” and “erotic women” you can find some very good examples of modern erotic photography. These are the people who should be praised for their artistic abilities and talents.

Erotic images have been present in virtually every society in this world. The Paleolithic carvings and cave paintings are an example of very old, but surviving erotic depictions. If you look at the ruins of Pompeii, you’ll see ancient Greek paintings that cover the walls. A country like Peru on the southern part of America had a community known as Moshe which centered on sculpturing explicit scenes into their pottery. Also, the Larco museum in Lima has many types of erotic ceramics and artwork.

The same has also been experienced in Eastern cultures. In Japan, the Shunga appeared from early in the thirteenth century up to late in the nineteenth century. All through, it continued to gain popularity until the invention of photography. In China, it was during the latter years of Ming dynasty that erotic art reached its climax. The Kama Sutra of India continues to enjoy popularity till today.
